Program Overview

The CCO Overhead Crane Operator certification is a nationally recognized and internationally accredited program developed by industry experts. It verifies the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate overhead and rail-mounted gantry cranes.

Who Is a Overhead Crane Operator?

An overhead crane operator controls bridge, gantry and similar cranes used to lift and move suspended loads. Certified operators demonstrate competency in inspections, crane controls, load handling, rigging, below-the-hook devices, safe operating practices and proper shutdown procedures while following applicable OSHA and ASME requirements.

Practical Exam Content

Exam Format

Practical examination demonstrating proficiency operating an Overhead Crane. Candidates must safely complete hands-on tasks involving inspection, precision load placement, vertical lifting, obstacle navigation, trolley control, and safe securing procedures.

Skills Tested

  • Task 1: Pre-Operational (Shift) Inspection – Demonstrate a pre-use inspection by identifying inspection items and explaining how to inspect them, including potential deficiencies that could affect safe crane operation.
