Who Is a Overhead Crane Operator?
An overhead crane operator controls bridge, gantry and similar cranes used to lift and move suspended loads. Certified operators demonstrate competency in inspections, crane controls, load handling, rigging, below-the-hook devices, safe operating practices and proper shutdown procedures while following applicable OSHA and ASME requirements.

Practical Exam Content
Exam Format
Practical examination demonstrating proficiency operating an Overhead Crane. Candidates must safely complete hands-on tasks involving inspection, precision load placement, vertical lifting, obstacle navigation, trolley control, and safe securing procedures.
Skills Tested
- Task 1: Pre-Operational (Shift) Inspection – Demonstrate a pre-use inspection by identifying inspection items and explaining how to inspect them, including potential deficiencies that could affect safe crane operation.
- Task 2: True Vertical Lift – Position the load hook directly over the test weight and perform a true vertical lift without horizontal crane movement after rigging, demonstrating precise hoist control.
- Task 3: Place Load in Circle #1 – Lift, transport, and accurately place the suspended test weight inside the designated circle while maintaining load control and avoiding contact with obstacles.
- Task 4: Negotiate Right Angle Corridor with Obstructions – Guide the suspended test weight through a right-angle obstacle course while maintaining required chain contact with the ground, clearing hurdles, avoiding obstacles, and accurately placing the load within the designated area.
- Task 5: Trolley Laydown – Demonstrate precise trolley control by positioning and laying master links accurately within designated targets while maintaining proper hook alignment and avoiding excessive side loading.
- Task 6: Safe Securing Procedures – Describe the proper procedures for safely securing the overhead crane and leaving the equipment in a safe condition at the end of the workday.
